A new paper claims that the expected lifespan of the universe is much shorter than previously thought, and that the cosmos could begin to fade in just 10 billion years.
However, this is just one possible hypothesis, and no one knows exactly when the end of the Universe will come.
There are two main theories about the end of the universe: the Big Freeze theory, which suggests that the cosmos will continue to expand until all the stars have exhausted their energy and cooled to absolute zero; and the Big Crunch theory, which suggests that the expansion of the universe is temporary, and after a certain point it will begin to contract, eventually collapsing in a reverse Big Bang. Scientists disagree about which of these theories is more likely, as recent observations have shown uncertainty about the rate of expansion of the universe, which has been called the cosmological crisis.
