Jim Lovell, Commander of NASA's Apollo 13 Moon Mission, Dies at 97

NASA astronaut Jim Lovell, who played a key role in turning the near-disastrous Apollo 13 moon mission into an inspiring story of resourcefulness and survival, has died aged 97.

Jim Lovell passed away Thursday (Aug. 7) in Lake Forest, Illinois, NASA officials said. But the veteran of four iconic space flights left a lasting mark on the agency and the country.

“Jim's personality and resilience helped our nation reach the moon and turn a potential tragedy into a learning success,” NASA Acting Administrator Sean Duffy said in a statement Friday (Aug. 8). “We mourn his loss while celebrating his accomplishments.”
