NASA is accelerating its plans to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon.
The agency has been working for years to prepare a 40-kilowatt fission system for a mission to the moon by the early 2030s. But acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy is preparing to announce a more ambitious plan, issuing a directive this week, Politico reports.
“The reactor directive directs the agency to solicit proposals from industry to launch a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor by 2030, a critical component to returning astronauts to the lunar surface,” Politico reported Monday (August 4).
