Northern Lights Forecast: Double Solar Eruption Lights Up Night Sky With Auroras

A rare double solar eruption created a spectacular display of northern lights overnight – and more auroras could be on the way.

Over the weekend, two separate solar eruptions sent a pair of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — clouds of solar plasma and radiation — toward Earth. At least one of the CMEs reached our planet's magnetic field around 1 p.m. ET Tuesday (April 15), resulting in geomagnetic storms and high-altitude aurora borealis.

Skywatchers across the Northern Hemisphere shared images of the nighttime show that took place yesterday. A live image gallery on Spaceweather.com showed parts of Iceland, Sweden, Finland and the UK were covered in spectacular auroras. Northern lights were also expected in the northern US and Canada, and the gallery confirmed a show in Minnesota.
