Let's start with this week's science news, where our solar system has met an unexpected “interstellar visitor.” On Tuesday (July 1), NASA and the International Astronomical Union confirmed the presence of a mysterious space object, likely a comet, heading toward our part of the Universe. The following day, NASA gave it an official name: 3I/ATLAS.
The interstellar object is moving at approximately 152,000 mph (245,000 km/h) on an unusually flat and straight trajectory that is unlike anything in the solar system.
3I/ATLAS is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever recorded, and scientists are now working hard to learn as much as possible about this rare object before it leaves the solar system next year.
