NASA researchers have discovered a mysterious formation on Mars that could shed light on the Red Planet's watery past.

The dark, pitted rock, dubbed Skull Hill, was captured by NASA's Perseverance rover while searching for signs of ancient life in the hills and rocky outcrops of Mars' barren Jezero Crater, a depression where scientists believe a vast ancient lake once existed.

The rock stands out from the lighter rocks that surround it, leading scientists to speculate that it may not have formed in its current location. It was likely transported to this location billions of years ago by a Martian river or lake. However, many questions remain about the rock’s origins and what it can tell us about the history of our cosmic neighbor.
