UK smartphone owners are being urged to check their contracts and make sure they aren’t overpaying.
Millions of UK iPhone and Android users are paying far too much for their phones and making one simple check could make a massive difference to those all-important monthly bills. That's according to the team at Uswitch who say around 5 million phone owners could each save around £350 a year by sending one simple text.
For those not aware, when buying a new iPhone 16 or Galaxy S25 on contract, some of the monthly fee pays for the device whilst a smaller amount goes towards data, calls and texts.
Once the 2- or 3-year contract ends, the phone belongs to the customer, but many continue to pay the same high price even though they now fully own their smartphone.

It's a major problem. According to Ofcom data, a fifth of all handset customers (19%) are currently out of contract and are paying outdated prices that reflect the cost of paying back a phone, even though this ‘payback’ period has been completed.
Those no longer tied to a contract can simply switch to a SIM-only plan, which, depending on the deal, can cost as little as £6 per month.
Many SIM-only deals also don't require users to sign up for lengthy contracts, with some available on a rolling monthly basis.
Not sure if you can switch?
Customers can text ‘INFO’ to 85075 to find out if they are out-of-contract and able to switch to a different provider without paying an exit fee.
It's easy to keep the same number and the difference in cost can be staggering. Of course, you'll have to keep the same phone, but if you are happy with what you own, it's vital you switch without delay.

“It’s important to remember that if your bundled phone contract includes a handset, you’re essentially ‘paying it off’ with your monthly phone bills," said Ernest Doku, Uswitch mobiles expert,
"Once your initial contract ends, you’ve contractually finished paying off the phone. However, this won’t be reflected in your monthly payments, and you’ll continue to pay the same amount as before, if not more.
“If you already own a phone, switching to a SIM-only contract can save you a significant amount of money in the long run: they typically offer lower monthly rates since you’re not paying for a new phone.
“If you’re still in contract remember to set a reminder for when your contract ends. Even seemingly small costs can add up over time, so it’s crucial to review your contract and make changes as needed.
“If you’re unsure whether you’re in contract or not, simply text “INFO” to 85075. If you do choose to switch providers, you can still keep your old mobile number. Just text “PAC” to 65075 for free and you will receive your PAC code. Once you receive the PAC code from this number, give it to your new provider and they will do the rest.”
