Veterinarian Amir Anvari believes these five breeds are ideal for growing families due to their kind and affectionate natures.
A vet has revealed his top five “best” dog breeds for families with young children, sparking a debate among animal lovers. Amir Anvari, known on TikTok as @amirthevet, suggests that these breeds are great for families with children due to their gentle and kind nature.
For those looking for a friendly pet, he recommends a boxer, beagle, poodle, golden retriever or bulldog.
Boxers
According to the Kennel Club, Boxers are considered “favorite family companions due to their intelligence and character.” They are praised for their excellent guarding qualities, as well as their experience in the armed forces as messengers and porters.
The club's statement said: “His clean-cut features, glossy coat and graceful head with expressive face attracted many admirers.”
Beagles
Beagles are described as “excellent hunting dogs and loyal companions” with a “happy” nature, making them easy to get along with. The Kennel Club notes: “Beagles are friendly and sweet, cheerful and sociable. All these qualities make them wonderful family dogs.”

Poodles
Poodles, whether standard, miniature or toy, are also considered great family pets due to their trainability. The Kennel Club states: “Poodles are energetic, athletic and incredibly intelligent dogs with excellent versatility.”
“With his impressive size and strength, the Standard is an excellent all-round athlete for the family.”
Golden Retrievers
These dogs are often perceived as the “ideal” family pets due to their calm and trusting nature.
The description says: “Golden Terriers are sociable, reliable and eager to please their family, and are relatively easy to train. They have a happy and playful demeanor, maintaining that puppy-like activity well into adulthood.”
It is also mentioned that these energetic, strong hunting dogs love to spend time outdoors, and swimming and retrieving are their natural hobbies.
Bulldogs
Bulldogs are described as “loyal and obedient companions,” ideal for a family environment. Experts add: “Bulldogs can weigh up to 50 pounds, but that doesn’t stop them from settling into your lap, or at least trying to.”
However, they caution not to confuse their playfulness with laziness, as bulldogs need short walks and regular moderate exercise, as well as a balanced diet, to stay in shape. Many commenters on the post believe that vet Anvari left out an obvious breed from his list – the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. One user noted: “Forgot the Staffie! They are great with children and are known as nanny dogs.”

Another added: “Beagle? Seriously? They can tear a house apart.” A third user noted: “Staffordshire Bull Terrier too! Never had a bad time, always loves kids!”
A breed expert noted: “The muscular yet agile Staffordshire Bull Terrier, despite its pugnacious past, has retained traits of courage and tenacity. Fortunately, good training has made this former fighter a kind, playful companion with a special attitude towards children.”
They added: “Staffords still resemble the pugnacious fighters who once ruled the fighting pits of England. But today, responsible breeders are producing good-natured, eager-to-please Staffords who are renowned for their patience and family friendliness. They are true loyal companions, but the old fighting instinct still lives on, so it is vital that Stafford puppies are socialised with other dogs to develop good manners.”
