Numerous individuals report peculiar sightings subsequent to the bereavement of relatives, with birds frequently regarded as a message from the afterlife. One astrologer has cast light on the significance of spotting robins specifically in the aftermath of a death, and what measures one should undertake upon encountering one.
Speaking on behalf of the tarot reading platform Tarotoo, astrologer Inbaal Honigman elucidated: “From a spiritual viewpoint, birds symbolise optimism and autonomy. This is associated with their wings and their capacity to soar, which gives the impression that they’re nearer to the divine, to the heavens.

“For instance, angel wings bear a resemblance to those of birds. The capability of birds to traverse the skies seems nothing short of remarkable to humans, considering our inability to fly.
“Specifically, robins embody the connection between the celestial and terrestrial realms, and this bird is perceived as a spiritual symbol of rejuvenation and rebirth. As an individual concludes their earthly existence, they undergo a transformation and transition into a spirit being. Robins are viewed as intermediaries between the living and the departed.
“Upon a person’s passing, numerous ancient cultures perceive them as ascending, their souls taking flight and transitioning to an ethereal existence, unburdened by the earthly plane.”, reports the Liverpool Echo.
This notion is not recent – the ancient Egyptians also held the conviction that the soul ascended post-mortem, at times assuming avian form.

The British Museum explained: “Each individual was comprised of several elements: essence (ka) and personality (ba), which united in the afterlife to constitute a flawless entity referred to as an akh.
“The ba was typically depicted as a bird with a human head. The deceased journeyed through the Duat in their distinct form and as the ba. The objective was to reach a designated location known as the Field of Reeds – Egyptian paradise.”
Inbaal further clarified: “The adage ‘when robins appear, loved ones are near’ has solidified the robin’s role in the folklore concerning death and mortality. It serves as a comforting symbol and a reminder of the soul’s immortality. The robin’s optimism, a vibrant red throughout winter, signifies spiritual continuity. As living souls, we do not cease to exist; we merely undergo transformation.”
Inbaal also imparted guidance on the appropriate course of action should a Robin manifest itself to you, and you suspect it might be connected to a deceased loved one. She suggested: “Upon observing a robin, dedicate a moment to articulate powerful words, bestowing blessings upon those who have passed on.
“Reflect on friends and relatives you’ve lost, and consider the message they might convey to you at this precise juncture in your life. You may be grappling with a decision regarding your professional life or your residence. The robin prompts you to evoke their memory, contemplating the advice your loved one would have offered.”.
Tony Putman, a gardener and emerging wildlife photographer, has cultivated an unexpected bond with a robin he affectionately refers to as “good friend Bob.”
Following a personal bereavement, Tony discovered comfort in the age-old saying ‘when robins appear, loved ones are near’.
In conversation with the BBC, Tony recounted his initial encounter with Bob during a gardening project in his hometown of Edenbridge. He stated: “Bob resides here in Edenbridge – which was my hometown, and I visit here twice a week to see him.”
He continued: “He generally shadows me around the garden – he even welcomes me at the gate on occasion. Typically, robins raise their offspring in the spring; they vanish thereafter – however, for reasons unknown, Rob returned this year after approximately a month.”
Tony posits that Bob’s reappearance was not simply fortuitous. He elaborated: “And he resurfaced during a particularly turbulent period in my life. Several individuals I deeply cherished became severely unwell. And the saying goes, ‘When a robin appears, a loved one is near.’ I remain uncertain as to the veracity of this, but it is rather curious that he arrived precisely when I believe I needed a semblance of support.”
He further added: “Moreover, someone who fervently championed my photography – she passed away a few days prior – and Bob was diligently shadowing me the day before, which I found immensely reassuring. She even had images of him adorning her wall, which was particularly heartwarming. I am hopeful that she remains with me – in different forms.”
