Powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits California coast

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of northern California on Thursday (December 5).

However, the tsunami warning originally issued for the earthquake has now been cancelled, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

The earthquake struck at 10:44 a.m. PDT (18:44 UTC) at a depth of about 0.4 miles (0.6 kilometers), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was off the coast, about 39 miles (63 kilometers) northwest of the city of Petrolia in Humboldt County. This data will likely be updated as more information is received from the USGS.

The USGS currently reports that “the amount of landslides caused by this earthquake is estimated to be minor.” According to the USGS Tremor Map, residents along the California coast reported strong shaking from the earthquake.

The area has also seen several smaller earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.2 and 3.3 today. There are no reports of major damage, according to the Los Angeles Times.
