The Holy Father made pointed reference to Ukraine in his weekly Sunday address following the conflict between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Pope Francis said in his Sunday message that the conflict in Ukraine looks “even more absurd” from his hospital bed.
The pope had a good night and is resting today after a bronchial spasm forced him to inhale vomit on Friday, raising fresh concerns for his health after two days of encouraging news about his battle with pneumonia. He said in a message that he shared the suffering of all those afflicted and renewed his prayers for world peace.
In a statement released by the Vatican, he also thanked his doctors for their care and all well-wishers for their prayers. In a moving reference to Ukraine after the conflict between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, the Holy Father said: “From this position, war seems even more absurd,” adding: “Let us pray for the tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan and Kiva.”

He stressed that his stay in the hospital was a moment of deep solidarity with those who are sick and suffering around the world. “I feel in my heart the ‘blessing’ that is hidden in weakness, because it is in such moments that we learn to rely even more on the Lord,” he said. “At the same time, I thank God for the opportunity to share in body and spirit the condition of so many sick and suffering people.”
It was the third weekend in a row that Francis missed saying the Sunday Angelus in person. He has no fever or signs of elevated white blood cell counts, which could indicate his body is still fighting an infection. Doctors said Saturday that Francis was in stable condition, with no mention of his being in critical condition.
It is his fourth hospitalization since his election in 2013, raising concerns about his increasingly fragile health. Prayers for Francis continued outside the Gemelli hospital, where he has been receiving treatment in the Papal Suite on the 10th floor since February 14.
