SpaceX's Starlink satellite network faces challenges from Russia and China after it was used in military action in Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion, according to a new report that assessed the space countermeasure capabilities of twelve countries over the past year.

A report released April 3 by the nonpartisan think tank Secure World Foundation (SWF) focuses on how humanity’s increasing reliance on space — particularly in the context of national security — has led many countries to develop their own countermeasures to space threats. The 316-page document assesses the space countermeasures of 12 countries, including the United States, Russia, China, India, Australia, and North and South Korea, based on publicly available information from February 2024 to February of this year.

“We believe that more open and public debate on these issues is essential,” the report’s foreword states. “Our global society and economy are increasingly dependent on space capabilities, and a potential conflict in space could have widespread, long-term negative consequences that would be felt here on Earth, as every person on the planet is a user of space data in some form.”
