Reddit's food-based relationship drama sparks thousands of reactions on social media

Video: Chef Guy Fieri's Amazing Foods and Drinks He's Loving Right Now

“Diners, Drive-Thru & Diners” host Guy Fieri recently shared with Fox News Digital his exciting food and drink finds he's currently obsessed with and explained why.

A man sharing his situation in a social media post is criticized for his expression and choice of words, although many people support his opinion.

The 27-year-old said his 24-year-old girlfriend is Brazilian and since they started dating, “she introduced me to her country's cuisine and I loved everything she cooked and everything I tried so far.”

Recently, however, he says, “she took me to a Brazilian steakhouse and at one point asked the waiter to bring me a dish that wasn't on the menu… but it turned out to be a staple of Brazilian barbecue.”

Only later, the man added, did she “explain to me that she had asked for chicken hearts.”

Since the dish wasn't on the restaurant's menu, she “told me she'd try to find it at the Brazilian store she usually goes to and make it at home,” the man wrote, “but I told her not to worry and that I wasn't interested in trying it.”

The man shared with others: “She couldn't understand why I wasn't interested, so I explained to her that the idea of eating chicken hearts seemed a little disgusting to me (I remember that was the word I used – she later said I told her it was 'disgusting', so I can't be sure, but either way it was the same).”

“I don’t know what she expected from me – a lie?”

He continued: “She became very upset and informed me that in many cultures, eating organs is not unusual and that even if I didn't want to try it, calling it 'disgusting' would be disrespectful.”

He added: “But I only said that because she kept insisting on an explanation. So I don't understand what she expected from me – a lie?”

He asked others for their opinions, and on Reddit, many spoke up, with most noting that there was nothing wrong with expressing your opinion on food, but the way it was done left much to be desired.

“You could say something more neutral like, 'This isn't something I'd like to try, and while I understand that others might like it, I don't find it appealing,'” one commenter wrote to the man caught up in the food drama. (iStock)

Almost 5,000 people responded, and more than 1,700 left comments.

In the top reaction, which itself received 11,000 responses, one person wrote: “The phrasing, my friend, the phrasing. You could have said something more neutral, like, 'This isn't something I want to try, while I understand others might like it, I don't find it appealing at all.'”

“Or something like that,” the same man continued.

“As you can now understand, the description 'unpleasant' didn't work.”

Another commenter added: “It doesn't matter whether you say 'disgusting' or 'gross', the point is the same. Of course, you don't have to try something you know you won't like, but there are many ways to express that, especially when it comes to cultural roots.”
