A woman has been arrested after the bodies of two children were found during a welfare check.
Emergency services arrived at a home on Emu Lane in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, just after 2pm on Monday to find boys aged six and seven dead inside.
A 66-year-old woman, believed to be the children's grandmother, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for further examination. She remains under police guard.
Authorities confirmed that the woman and children were related.
Police said there was no threat to the public and that they were not looking for any other suspects in connection with the incident.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed his condolences, saying: “What has happened is terrible and as a state we share the grief of the Coonabarabran community at the loss of two boys who had their whole lives ahead of them.”
“I cannot even imagine the grief their families, friends and teachers are going through,” he added, also thanking the local police for their professionalism and courage in responding to this tragic situation.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed that extra police had been deployed to the city as the investigation continued. The investigation is ongoing.
It comes as a US couple prepares to spend the rest of their lives in prison after their two-year-old baby died after being left in a hot car with his three siblings. Their fifth child, a three-year-old, also died of malnutrition after being rushed to hospital.
Deja and Justin Rollins were sentenced to 70 years in prison at the conclusion of what prosecutors described as one of the most “disturbing” cases they have ever handled. The couple admitted to leaving their four children — ages 2, 4, 7 and 10 — in a hot car while they were driving their 3-year-old to Little Rock Children’s Hospital in Arkansas on July 7, 2024, the Pulsaki County District Attorney’s Office said.
Prosecutors said the couple's three-year-old child died from severe malnutrition, prompting a police investigation into the baby's siblings.
“This case is one of the most disturbing and heartbreaking our office has ever seen,” Attorney Will Jones said in a statement.
Mother Deja, 28, and father Justin, 30, locked their four children in a hot car parked outside Arkansas Children's Hospital while they took their 3-year-old to a “medical emergency,” officials said.
After receiving a report of child abuse and neglect, police officers rushed to the hospital but soon discovered a car outside the facility.
Meanwhile, Deja and Justin did not tell officers where the car was, according to the Jacksonville Police Department.
The children were taken to hospital where they were treated for heat exhaustion, but sadly the youngest, two-year-old J'Dien Rollins, died the following day from severe heat exhaustion and acute malnutrition.
The couple pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and first-degree domestic violence.
