Researchers have created a new type of laser amplifier that can transmit data 10 times faster than existing solutions.
Laser amplifiers increase the power of light beams. This particular amplifier achieves a tenfold increase in transmission speed by expanding the bandwidth, or range of wavelengths of light, at which lasers can send information.
The amount of information we create and transmit is growing every day. With the rise of streaming services, smart devices, and generative AI, Nokia Bell Labs predicted in its Global Network Traffic report that the volume of data will double by 2030.
