The length of the leather boot is 12.6 inches, which is equivalent to US men's shoe size 14.
Vindolanda TrustThe first boot found at Fort Magna is in surprisingly good condition, although it is missing its toe.
The second boot found at the excavation turned out to be more intact and so large that it “astonished volunteers and staff.”
“Although in this case only one of several layers of the sole [was intact],” the archaeologists said, “the size of the shoe and speculation about who might have worn it have become a central topic of discussion.”
The shoe measures 12.6 inches in length, which is equivalent to a US men's shoe size 14.
While the shoe's size makes it a unique find, volunteers at the excavation site were excited about the artifact for another reason.
“It's always exciting to find something that hasn't been touched for 2,000 years, but shoes are a very personal item; they really give you a connection with the people who lived in the fort,” said one volunteer.
Indeed, Fort Magna has a long and fascinating history, which began around 2,000 years ago with the construction of Hadrian's Wall.
