Scientists warn that melting glaciers could lead to more frequent and destructive volcanic eruptions, further exacerbating climate change problems.
Hundreds of volcanoes in Antarctica, Russia, New Zealand and North America are covered in ice sheets. But as global warming and these ice sheets melt, such volcanoes are likely to become more active, according to a new study examining the activity of six volcanoes in southern Chile during the last ice age.
The researchers will present their findings on Wednesday (July 8) at the 2025 Goldschmidt Conference in Prague.
