A New South Wales (NSW) man has become the first person in the state to be infected with Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV), a rabies-like infection that cannot be cured once symptoms appear. It is the fourth recorded human case of the disease.

On July 2, when NSW Health made the announcement, the man, who was in his 50s and lived in northern NSW, was in a critical condition and being treated in hospital. The following day, Health announced his death.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this man on his tragic loss,” a New South Wales health official said on July 3, The Australian reported.
