Supersonic commercial flight could soon become a reality in the United States, thanks to a new executive order that lifts a 52-year-old ban on ground-based commercial supersonic flights.

Although supersonic aircraft could cross the Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned commercial supersonic flights on land in 1973 amid public pressure over noise. The new order, issued June 6, lifts that restriction and sets a timeline for establishing noise-based certification rules for supersonic aircraft.

The move could significantly cut travel time between New York and Los Angeles, from six hours to just 3.5 hours.
