An unpredictable magnetic storm hits the Earth

Late in the evening of June 12 at 11 p.m. Moscow time, a magnetic storm suddenly began on Earth.

It continues to this day. The question is that either they couldn't predict its onset, or they didn't have time.

Gazeta.ru reports on the space weather with reference to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The storm is classified as medium strength, but experts were unable to predict it.

As of this morning, the geomagnetic disturbance has reached level G2.3, which is considered above average.

Even such disturbances can affect the operation of power systems and radio communications.

It is still unknown what caused the sharp change in the geomagnetic environment.

Researchers only noted a few hours before the situation changed an increase in the density of solar plasma, as well as an increase in the magnetic field.

Against this background, the speed of the solar wind remains stable.

It is worth noting that scientists predicted a completely different phenomenon, which was supposed to begin on the night of June 14.

The impact of a large coronal hole on the Sun in the southern hemisphere should have been noticeable.

One of the possible explanations for the magnetic storm that has begun is the possibility of the Earth colliding with a dense flow of matter from the edge of this hole.

As a result, there is a possible increase in solar wind during the day.

Scientists note that it is impossible to accurately predict the start of a storm and its power.

The current unstable geomagnetic situation will last for 2-3 days.
