Statues crying have been reported, but have you ever witnessed a picture exuding? One clergyman professes that a hallowed depiction of Mary and a young Jesus is yielding myrrh, and has been occurring since 1997. With people hurrying to observe this ‘miraculous’ image, what is truly happening? (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X/Holy Theotokos of Iveron Orthodox Church)The picture isn’t a rarity; it’s a $20 extensively produced print reportedly discovered in Toronto and presented to Father Nectarios Yangson for a Name Day celebration. It presently resides at Honolulu’s Holy Theotokos of Iveron Russian Orthodox Church. However, according to the Father, the encased picture has been emitting a glutinous, fragrant material resembling the scent of roses – identified by the Father as myrrh. (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X)
What is myrrh?
Myrrh holds significance in the Bible, recognized as one of the trio of gifts bestowed upon Jesus by the Three Wise Men at his birth. It is a fragrant gum resin originating from particular Arabian and African trees, referenced in both the Old and New Testaments. The resin possesses a profound, earthy-woody aroma, sometimes with a subtly spicy or almost bitter note. However, it has also been likened to a pleasing scent – akin to licorice, anise, or vanilla. (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X)In 2007, the Father composed a letter to his congregation, recounting an abrupt, intense myrrh fragrance in his office, noticeable even to his cat. He detailed: ‘I was occupied in my office, also serving as our home chapel where our icon corner is situated. My cat entered and started sniffing, as if detecting something. I perceived nothing. He proceeded toward our family reliquaries. I found this odd, as he’d never approach them; an unseen force always deterred him. Yet, this time he stood on his hind legs, sniffing, seemingly trying to identify the smell. I still smelled nothing. I lifted him, then noticed the scent. It was potent, even overwhelming.’ (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X)He added: ‘I’ve never encountered such a scent. I couldn’t grasp why I hadn’t detected it earlier. It resembled a thousand roses filling the room. I made the sign of the cross and invoked the Jesus Prayer for protection. I set the cat down and inspected the icons. I hesitated to examine the icons near the reliquaries. I finally approached the icon of the Cross and observed that the bead of myrrh by Christ’s side-wound was still dry. For a fleeting moment, I regained composure, even as the rose scent intensified. Then, I looked down and my hand was damp — it was myrrh. How did it appear there? The icon was dry? Or was it not?’ (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X)He recounts that droplets of the substance materialized on the baby Jesus’ left knee in the image, rapidly enveloping it in resin. The Father has since stated that ‘numerous miracles have been attributed’ to the image, encompassing the ‘restoration of sight and cure of eye ailments, cancer remission, exorcism of demonic influence, recovery from paralysis, alleviation of kidney disease, management of chronic pain, and vanquishment of debilitating viruses’. Visitors to the church have been absorbing the substance with cotton swabs and applying them to their foreheads. The image has journeyed to over 1,000 churches throughout the US and internationally, where the Father indicates it has been venerated by ‘millions of individuals’ (Picture: @RealBenLuigi/X)Video clips of the icon have been shared online, portraying the paper image within a wooden casing reported to be discharging myrrh. A white fabric was positioned behind the casing, visibly becoming saturated with the resin, along with the table beneath. Father Nectarios communicated on the church’s website: ‘Some days are completely devoid [of myrrh], while others are saturated. Regardless of the presence or absence of streaming, they continuously emit an intensely strong rose fragrance. It truly represents an extraordinary miracle! I occasionally question if it serves as a forewarning.’ (Picture: Holy Theotokos of Iveron Orthodox Church)
