A near-death experience (NDE) is a condition in which a person is declared clinically dead but returns to life after a certain amount of time. For Lauren Canaday, then 39, this happened after 24 minutes, and she recounted everything that happened during that time. Research shows that people who experience NDEs typically experience positive experiences: flashbacks of their lives, out-of-body experiences, dreams, or meditative states. So what did Lauren experience? (Photo: Facebook)
What's happened?
Her heart stopped on February 7, 2023. In a Reddit Q&A, she revealed that she suffered sudden cardiac arrest. She had been taking medication for her controlled epilepsy for years, but she suffered a grand mal seizure, which causes severe muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, and respiratory arrest. She said: “In February, I went into sudden cardiac arrest at home. My husband called 911 and started CPR. It took the EMS team 24 minutes to revive me. After 9 days in the ICU, I was declared 'cognitively healthy,' and my MRI showed no visible brain damage. I also have a normal EEG, despite a history of seizures and a status epilepticus that lasted over 30 minutes immediately after resuscitation.” Her husband found her and called 911, then began performing CPR on his wife until paramedics arrived. However, paramedics managed to restore her heartbeat by using a defibrillator to shock her four times. The incident is suspected to have been caused by complications from COVID-19. But after the experience, Lauren says she feels like she's been given a “second life” and recounts the unexpected benefits it has brought. However, in an interview with Newsweek, Lauren admitted that while she can't recall specific visions or images, she describes her encounter with death with intriguing positivity. She said, “I have an inner sense that it was friendly and peaceful, although I can't recall any images, personalities, or visions from that time. I feel like I've dissolved, and it was very pleasant.” And despite the lack of clear memories of feelings or thoughts during the incident, she added, “I have a strong sense of peace associated with the time I was unconscious.” But after the experience, she said she began to find joy in small things, from taking a shower to eating a hospital cheeseburger. She said, “I remember so many very peaceful moments in the hospital and afterward, as if all my previous worries ceased to matter, and I was incredibly happy about things like cheeseburgers. Everything seemed so simple. I feel like this is my second life. I feel like I have two birthdays.” She explained, “In my first life, I was very individualistic and strong. In this life, I have a completely different worldview, and I'm—mostly—comfortable depending on others… Many things, like status and career success, don't matter beyond the needs of survival, comfort, and helping others (now).” And in her interview, she admitted, “I wasn't religious, and I'm not sure I am now, but I've definitely become more spiritual.” Lauren released a memoir, Independence Avenue: How Individualism Killed Me and Community Brought Me Back to Life, which chronicles her journey to rebuild her life after a devastating incident left her derailed. She explains that life is all about basic priorities, such as sleep, healthy eating, exercise, reflection, and relationships. “I try to get 10,000 steps a day and walk once a week if I can,” she said. “I spend a lot of time in silence, including silent prayer or meditation. I usually go to bed around 8 p.m.” (File image) (Photo: Getty)
