When will we find alien life? Astronomers set a new date after a sensational discovery on Jupiter.

The scientific world is once again discussing the possibility that the answer to humanity's greatest question may be closer than we think. This is prompted by new data from NASA's Juno mission, which is exploring Jupiter and its moons.

Astronomers have recorded signs of active magma beneath Io's surface and unusual chemical processes in the giant's atmosphere.

These observations have forced scientists to reconsider the timeframe for searching for extraterrestrial life, reports a Belnovosti correspondent.

It was previously thought that the coming decades would be devoted solely to searching for microbes on Mars or in the subglacial oceans of Europa. But new data from Jupiter has shown that the conditions for life may be far more diverse.

Of particular interest were traces of organic compounds in the upper atmosphere. They do not prove the presence of living organisms, but they do indicate chemical processes similar to those on Earth.

Astronomers speak cautiously about “biosignatures.” These are indirect signs that may indicate the existence of life.

Scientists are now tentatively estimating a date: the 2040s. This is the time when missions capable of directly exploring the subglacial oceans of Jupiter's moons are planned to launch.

Europa remains the leading candidate. Beneath its icy crust lies an ocean whose volume exceeds all of Earth's seas combined.

If even the simplest forms of life are found there, it will be the greatest discovery in history. It will prove that life in the Universe is not unique.

Philosophers are already discussing the consequences. Humanity will have to reconsider its place in the cosmos.

But scientists warn: the discovery may not be so romantic. The first life forms will likely be microbes, not intelligent beings.

However, even microbes will change our understanding of evolution. They will prove that life arises where energy and water are present.

Astronomers are confident that the question is no longer whether life exists beyond Earth. The question is when we will find it.
And new data from Jupiter has brought that moment closer.
