Fortune telling with coffee grounds originated in Italy and is now a fairly common practice. Now, to learn your destiny, you don't have to go to a traditional fortune teller; you can easily perform this ceremony at home.
Preparation
Brew three teaspoons of coffee, let it sit, and then pour out the liquid, leaving the thickest sediment at the bottom of the pot. (This is how the fortuneteller's fate is revealed; the guest's fate is determined by the cup they drank from.)
It doesn't matter whether the grounds are old or fresh, the main thing is that the grounds are almost dry at the moment when you begin fortune telling.
Then take the coffee pot, but don’t shake it, add a glass of water.
Then put the coffee pot on the fire and stir the grounds with water until they dissolve.
Take a clean white porcelain or earthenware plate and dry it thoroughly.
Pour the grounds onto a plate, only halfway. Let it sit for a bit and cool.
Then, tilt the plate from side to side for a minute, then carefully pour everything in the plate into another container. There shouldn't be any water left on the plate; only particles of grounds will remain. Their different arrangements create a variety of patterns, which are worth paying attention to.
Meanings of the drawings
When you pour coffee grounds onto a plate, you'll see an endless number of symbols, each with its own meaning. Here are the main meanings of possible symbols and drawings.
Lines
Large or small lines, if they are convex and numerous, signify a happy and long old age. If the lines are sparse, they foretell a stable financial situation.
A two- or three-centimeter-long line down the middle of a plate foretells a long journey: it will be fortunate if the line continues without visible obstacles. If there are dots along the line, you can expect obstacles and troubles along the way. If the line extends to the edges of the plate, it foretells a trip abroad.
Circles, crowns, diamonds
More or less complete circles, outnumbering other figures, signify the imminent receipt of money or an inheritance. If they are sparse, however, it indicates that major obstacles will arise in business.
A circle with four prominent dots, if seen by a woman, foretells a possible pregnancy; two circles indicate the birth of twins. Carefully examine the shape of this circle: if it's closed, a son will be born; if closed, a daughter.
If one of the circles enclosing the four dots is accompanied by a tortuous and crooked line, it signifies that the child will be intelligent; when a tortuous and crooked line forms a second circle around the circle, it foretells genius or some original peculiarity in the child.
A wreath foretells the favor of nobles, while diamonds promise success in love and easy conquests over the fair sex. However, if you notice a number of more or less round shapes, various obstacles and troubles await you. However, if a triangle appears at the end of these shapes, which cling to one another like beads in a rosary, then you can hope that your patience will be rewarded and your wishes will come true.
If you see a crown with a cross, you will mourn the death of a close relative this year. A crown made of triangles and squares signifies the death of a female relative.
Crosses
A cross seen in the middle of the drawings on the plate foretells a peaceful death that will not come anytime soon.
Four adjacent crosses foretell a long and serious illness; if a young woman or girl asks, she will die from a bruise.
Three crosses sometimes predict success in the world.
Squares, angles, triangles and ovals
The more squares you notice, the more troubles and disappointments you should expect.
If oval figures are found in large numbers or are outlined very clearly, they promise success in business.
A triangle foretells an honorable or at the same time profitable position, but if three triangles appear to you, located close to each other, then rejoice, because you will become rich.
In general, one or two triangles foretell happiness.
A circle consisting of the connection of many angles is a sign of a happy marriage.
An oblong quadrangle portends great trouble in married life. If this quadrangle is surrounded by more or less perfect crosses, the husband should fear infidelity on the part of his wife; conversely, a quadrangle surrounded by crosses signifies infidelity on the part of the husband.
At home
If you notice a figure of a house located near a circle on a plate, then you can hope that you will soon own this house.
If you see the letter X or H next to this house, it will be located in the city.
If you see a figure of a tree, bush or some kind of plant near this sign, then this house will be located in a village.
If a house is surrounded by many triangles, then it will be given to you as a gift or inherited.
If the house is close to the semicircle, it means that you will enjoy constant happiness in it.
Animals, furniture and windows
If you spot a bird, expect something good to happen. But beware of a destructive process if you think the bird is struggling, caught in a hunter's net.
A figure representing many small fish foretells an invitation to dinner.
You are threatened with betrayal or some kind of treachery, from which you will be able to free yourself with difficulty if you discern the figure of a snake or other reptiles on the plate.
The figure of a four-legged animal foretells grief and poverty.
The shape of a chest signifies the receipt of a letter; a wheel foretells an unpleasant adventure that will cause more fear than harm.
The shape of a harnessed carriage foretells the violent death of a loved one or a close relative; if you discern a gun, then obstacles will be encountered in your affairs.
An open window or a large number of circles, rectangles, ovals and other shapes adjacent to each other and forming a kind of window, foretell that you will be robbed.
Human figures
The designs on the plate almost always represent some kind of human figure.
A head on a large skirt clearly means a woman.
If you notice a head and torso resting on spread legs, it's a sign of a man. Seeing a dog's head or shape near a human figure indicates the devotion of a loyal friend. If a dog's head or shape is near a circle, it signifies fidelity on the part of a husband and wife.
If a young man makes a wish and notices the form of a woman holding a stick, then he will be deceived by a coquette, and this relationship will bring him many misfortunes.
A woman near whom you notice a flower is a symbol of a true friend. If the flower resembles a rose, it foretells a friend for a young man; but if it resembles a tulip, it signifies a false friend who cannot be relied upon.
A man riding a four-legged animal means that one honorable person will do you a great favor.
A woman riding a horse signifies for the fortuneteller, a lady or a girl, a passion that will lead to various stupidities.
Flowers and trees
A bouquet made up of different flowers always serves as a harbinger of happiness.
A triangle located near a bouquet also portends prosperity for both men and women.
The bush signifies obstacles, the weeping willow signifies grief and sorrow, and the rose signifies health.
Numbers and letters
If you see a number in the drawings on the plate, then consider it to be the number that fate favors.
The letter C means joy, the letter N means bondage, the letter O means hard work that remains unrewarded, the letter R means release from prison or winning a lawsuit.
