Sharks are among the toughest creatures on Earth. These ancient creatures have been on the planet since before dinosaurs and trees, surviving multiple mass extinctions. They are also incredibly diverse: the world’s oceans are home to more than 500 modern species, ranging from tiny palm-sized fish to 60-foot-long giants.

Sharks perform important functions in ocean ecosystems and are found in all oceans around the world. However, many species are currently under threat from climate change, overfishing, pollution, and the shark fin trade.
