Briton Dies in Turkey After Hair Transplant Amid 'Murder' Case

A 38-year-old British man has died shortly after five hours of a hair transplant operation in Istanbul, Türkiye.

A British man who travelled to Turkey for a hair transplant has died after falling ill following the operation.

The 38-year-old man reportedly flew to Istanbul to the private CINIK hospital. After a five-hour transplant operation, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The man, whose name has not been released, was later pronounced dead. Traveling abroad for cosmetic procedures is on the rise, but many are reporting hidden risks.

Police investigating his death are investigating whether it was a case of “negligent homicide”. Hospital staff, the surgeon who performed the transplant, the anaesthetist and nurses have been interviewed. Mirror Online has asked the Foreign Office for comment. It comes after the “horrific” death of a British mother infected with rabies after being bitten by a puppy while on holiday.

The tourist's body was handed over to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination after his death on Monday. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it was liaising with the authorities to assist the family.

Last year, figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons showed that the number of patients requiring hospital admission in the UK after cosmetic surgery abroad had increased by 94% over the past three years. Complications included problems with wound healing and even sepsis.

More than 75% of these procedures were carried out in Turkey, but also in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland and Romania. The British choose these countries mainly because of lower prices, which can be up to 70% lower than in the UK.

An undercover investigation by the Mirror earlier this year revealed the vast array of services on offer to medical tourists in Turkey. From buttock lifts to unproven treatments for autism, from new teeth to the modestly named “genital aesthetics”, a surprising and sometimes disturbing world is on display in London.

One dentist offered an undercover reporter 20 new teeth after a two-second consultation, while a hospital spokesman claimed controversial treatments could help a three-year-old with autism. The International Health Tourism Expo is being held by Turkish company ALZ International at the QEII Exhibition Centre, just a stone's throw from Parliament.
