Researchers say they have found compelling evidence that the human brain can continue to create new neurons even into adulthood, which could end a decades-long debate.

This process of neuron formation, known as neurogenesis, occurs in the hippocampus, a key region of the brain that plays an important role in learning, memory, and emotional responses.

“In a nutshell, our study puts to rest a long-standing debate about whether new neurons can form in the adult brain,” study co-author Marta Paterlini, a researcher at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, told Live Science in an email.
