It was not obvious why the woman and her partner were unable to become parents, but a series of allergy tests pointed to a possible cause. (Image credit: SEBASTIAN KAULITZKI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY via Getty Images)
Patient: 29-year-old woman from Lithuania.
Symptoms: The woman had been trying to get pregnant with her partner but had failed to conceive. Two cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF) had also failed, and gynecological examinations had not revealed any reason why she would not be able to conceive. (Doctors reviewing the case in the report did not specify whether any fertility tests had been performed on her partner.)
However, the patient had a history of asthma and hypersensitivity to inhaled allergens such as mold, cat dander and dust. So she sought medical attention to see if her allergies might be affecting her fertility.
