In scientific studies, people often notice that time seems to pass more slowly during exercise than when they are at rest. Why does this happen? (Image credit: Mint Images via Getty Images)
Time may fly when you’re having fun, but in other situations it can feel like it’s dragging on at a snail’s pace. For many, time seems to slow down more when they’re physically active — you glance at the clock between runs on the treadmill or sets at the gym and find that your last half hour of effort actually feels like only 10 minutes.
So does time perception really change when people exercise? And if so, why?
According to a study published in April 2024 in the journal Brain and Behavior, experimental data shows that people do indeed perceive time as moving more slowly during exercise, whether they are exercising alone or competing with others.
