Despite years of research into obesity, the processes that occur in the body during weight loss and the reasons why it may improve health remain poorly understood.
A new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday (July 9) offers new insights into what's really going on. It suggests that weight loss isn't just about shedding pounds, but about changing fat at the cellular level, which rewires tissue metabolism and perhaps even “rejuvenates” it.
The study also explains why losing weight doesn’t always resolve all the health problems associated with obesity. The results showed that some markers of poor health associated with obesity, such as inflammatory cells, don’t go away even after losing weight.
