A year earlier, a six-year-old boy survived more than 1,100 bee stings. The boy was on a farm with his stepfather, who was also stung, near Sidrolandia in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.

According to local sources, the child was rushed to hospital after being bitten multiple times. He spent time in a coma on a ventilator, but the machine was later switched off.

The boy's father, Celio Samuel, said that at the time of the attack his son was with his stepfather, who was wounded.

He commented: “His health is improving every day and today the tube was removed. He is no longer connected to multiple machines – it is a divine miracle.”

Toxicologist Sandro Benitez from the Toxicology Monitoring Center (Civitox) said prompt medical attention was key to the boy's survival.

He explained: “Usually over 100 bites are fatal for children. For adults, the number over 500 is dangerous. Thanks to immediate response and quick help, this child survived despite over 1,100 bites.”
