The watchtower was part of the Danube Limes on the northern borders of the Roman Empire, where it was used for protection against Germanic tribes.
Udruga Dolina Mamuta/FacebookExcavations in 2025 confirmed the presence of a Roman watchtower.
The structure, located in the Croatian town of Mohovo, measured approximately 130 feet by 100 feet and was strategically placed along deep ravines. Around 1,800 years ago, it was heavily protected by ditches and a fence and was just one of many Roman watchtowers that lined the river.
At the site, archaeologists also found fibulae (brooches), pottery, iron arrows and other artifacts indicating that the watchtower was in use from the 2nd to 3rd centuries. During that period, it likely played an important role in the Marcomannic Wars.
