From suggestions that Kennedy's assassination was an “inside job” to claims that vaccines contain microchips, the world is full of conspiracy theories. The term was coined in the 1860s, when it appeared in a letter to The New York Times discussing British aid during the Civil War.
Fast forward 150 years and we see that conspiracy theories have become more prevalent than ever before, which can be attributed to the rise of social media, the spread of misinformation, and a number of psychological factors, including the desire to understand the world around us.
