Electricity, the internet and penicillin have been voted the greatest inventions of all time. A poll of 2,000 adults found that electricity generation, often associated with Thomas Edison, came in first place. The internet, created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1990, came in second, and penicillin, discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928, came in third.
Modern technologies such as smartphones, GPS navigators and 3D printers also made the list of the top 40 inventions. Half of respondents believe that the main benefit of these modern devices is their ability to make life easier, while 34% value how certain technologies help them stay in touch with loved ones.

The study found that 56% of people find it difficult to go more than a day without technology, with the average time spent in front of a screen being six and a half hours a day, and 12% spending 12 hours or more in front of a screen.
Research sponsored by Vuse Ultra found the average adult spends £1,013 a year on new technology, with those aged 25 to 34 spending the most at £2,121.
A company spokesman commented: “It's clear that the British public is actively embracing technology that improves their lives in one way or another, and all these small improvements add up to a big change in their everyday lives.”
The top 40 inventions also include various means of transportation, such as airplanes, automobiles, steam engines and bicycles.
Along with penicillin, vaccines and defibrillators were seen as symbols of the medical field; energy sources such as batteries and solar panels also gained popularity.
The study also found that one-fifth of respondents believed they had the potential to create a “good” invention. Potential innovations included devices that run on batteries all the time, smart shoes that track steps and a mobile refrigerator.
The study, conducted by OnePoll for Vuse Ultra, also identified the technologies we expect to see by 2050. Topping the list are robots or androids as home assistants (30 percent).
Other predictions include universal translators for seamless communication (22 percent), virtual reality vacations and experiences (17 percent), and self-cleaning homes (15 percent).
