A homesick Brit travelling through India was delighted when he found fish and chips on a menu – but what arrived on his place looked nothing like he expected.
A homesick Brit was left scratching his head after he ordered fish and chips – only to get a nasty surprise.
Taking their tale of culinary woe to Reddit, the man posted a photo of his meal that looked nothing like a meal you would get in a traditional British chippie. “I’m an Englishman travelling India,” he wrote alongside the unappetising image.
“Fancied some British food and ordered fish and chips… wow, what a sight this was.”
The plate featured the usual collection of fries you would expect, but the usual piece of golden-battered cod or haddock you might expect was nowhere to be seen. Instead, six peculiar brown items sat on the plate.
The dish swiftly became a talking point among other British users on Reddit. “Just because you caught it floating in the river doesn’t necessarily make it a fish,” another Reddit user penned in jest.

Another chimed in: “Before I zoomed in they almost looked like little chocolate donuts and like one had some caramel oozing out which I wouldn’t eat with potatoes myself but I could have one or two. Zooming in it no longer looked like chocolate but almost like there were bits of coconut so I’m thoroughly befuddled.”
Rounding off the reactions, a third person jibed: “Didn’t you order s**t and chips accidentally?” Meanwhile, a fourth commenter’s stomach couldn’t withstand the visual ordeal: “I feel so sick right now moaning to myself in a hotel room (food poisoning maybe? ) and this just made me puke in my mouth. I wish you would have kept this misfortune to yourself today.”

Meanwhile others were keen to share their own eccentric culinary encounters while travelling. One recalled: “I spent three months in India, and at one moment I saw a place selling Italian pizza. Because I was tired of curry at that point, I was like ‘yes, one pizza please’.
“What I got had nothing to do with pizza. It was something that vaguely resembled a pizza margherita, made by someone who has only seen a picture of it.”
And not everyone was ready to write off the fish and chips quite so hastily. A commenter looking to clarify what the dish might actually be remarked: “Those are likely fish cutlets, at least my wife’s family would call it a cutlet.
“There is meat in the inside, likely fish in this case, and a chickpea breading or similar (lentil, pea, flour) and deep fried. Of course some Indian spices which also give the dark color. In my home they are usually made with beef, and super delicious.”
