Deep-sea fishermen cast their nets and people are shocked by their catch

Fisherman Roman Fedortsov shocked the public by catching something terrifying from the Pacific Ocean – many began to suspect that it could be an alien.

A deep-sea fisherman has shown off his terrifying catch – a strange creature that some have compared to an alien.

With its large, bulbous body, wrinkled eyes, and open mouth, the fish looks like something that could be found on another planet. Roman Fedortsov caught the beast in the North Pacific Ocean and shared footage of his unusual friend with his 600,000 TikTok followers.

Fedortsov later identified the creature as Aptocyclus ventricosus — also known as the smooth lumpfish. This species of marine ray-finned fish lives in deep waters and can reach an impressive 44 cm in length, What's The Jam reports.

While the smooth lumpfish's appearance is certainly unusual, Fedortsov's find appears to be slightly distorted, perhaps due to pressure changes as it rose to the surface, which caused its body to stretch.

Fedortsov, who primarily works on a trawler in Murmansk in northwestern Russia, posted a video of the creature on board his vessel that has been viewed by 200,000 people, many of whom are now convinced that aliens exist – or at least swim – among us.

“Yes, aliens are real,” one user noted. “This is 100% an alien,” another agreed. A third added: “It looks like an alien head.” A fourth exclaimed: “How terrifying.”

The reaction became even more extreme when one Instagram user darkly suggested: “Kill it and burn it and never catch one of those again!” Another joked: “Fishing in Chernobyl?”

A third compared the appearance to the film franchise: “Alien or Predator?” While others compared the fish to the cartoon's Megamind, whose villain played by Will Ferrell has a distinctive large head, the X-Men and the “Dark Lord” Voldemort from Harry Potter.

According to naturalists, the smooth lumpfish was first officially described as Cyclopterus ventricosus in 1769 by the German zoologist Peter Simon Pallas, and its type habitat was indicated as Tauyskaya Bay near Olsky Island in the Sea of Okhotsk.

It also states: “They are brownish-gray in color with dark spots on the back and dirty gray on the ventral side. They have naked skin without scales and tubercles. The smooth lumpfish has no dorsal or anal spines, it has eight to nine dorsal soft rays and seven to nine anal soft rays.”

“They have a rounded tail fin and large, broadly based pectoral fins. Their pelvic fins have evolved into a clinging disc with a thickened edge on the ventral surface of the body. The first dorsal fins are completely hidden under the skin.”
