Unqualified doctor 'killed woman' by 'operating on her without anesthesia'

Son of Sonia Devi, 35, was shocked to see his mother bleeding on the operation table after she was admitted to Gagan Hospital for gallstone surgery.

A woman died after an unscrupulous doctor performed surgery without anaesthesia despite not having the necessary qualifications.

Investigators arrived at a private hospital in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh that was not licensed to perform surgeries and found it locked while the suspect had fled. Inside, they found the body of a woman still on the operating table.

Sonia Devi, a 35-year-old woman, was admitted to the hospital for gallstone removal but was not under anaesthesia when Mohd Abrar made an incision on her, leaving a severe 11-inch gash on her abdomen. Unfortunately, this resulted in her bleeding to death at Gagan Hospital in Tanabhawan, Shamli.

Her husband Deshraj Singh told the Times of India, “My wife was working in the health sector as an ASHA (social health worker). She met Abrar, who introduced himself as a doctor. When she approached him for her gallstones, he assured her that the operation was minor and asked her to visit his hospital. I think Abrar intended to remove my wife's kidney. Gallstone surgery does not require such a big incision.”

Her son Ayush Kumar, who was with her at the hospital, said he asked the 'doctor' to wait for his father to arrive, but 'they went ahead with the operation without informing us'.

“When I entered the operating room, I saw my mother lying there with no signs of life,” he added.

District Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashwini Kumar said, “Our team visited the hospital but it was closed. The facility is registered for inpatient, outpatient and day care only, with no permission for surgical procedures. No qualified surgeon was available. Notices have been issued to Abrar and the service provider Dr Areeb Ali Siddiqui to respond within three days.”

Yesterday it became known that a unique surgical operation was performed in India on a boy who had two extra legs attached to his stomach.

A 17-year-old boy, who was born with four legs, underwent surgery at the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi to remove the extra limbs. The rare and complex procedure was performed by a team of experienced doctors at the prestigious hospital in the Indian capital.

The teenager had two extra legs attached to his abdomen in addition to his normal lower limbs. The case presented a complex surgical challenge as such an operation had never been performed at the institution before.
