A bride has sparked controversy after she refused to pay the wedding caterer after her mother ordered the wrong food for the event. A social media user reached out to the online community on Reddit to share this episode where his friend, who has a small catering business, was refused payment at the end of the wedding.
The individual on social media mentioned that his friend typically requires full payment in advance. However, due to the impromptu nature of the meal arrangement, he made an exception by accepting the booking before receiving the payment.
The user wrote: “My friend has a small catering business. Usually he takes full payment beforehand, but this meal was organised at short notice (they thought they had booked the date just by enquiring about availability, but hadn’t paid anything so the booking was not in the diary).
“It was a family who had hired him for other large weddings and this was a very small affair so he agreed to the booking and planned everything in writing with the mother of the bride and a price was agreed.”
After the wedding was over, the mother of the bride called him to express her gratitude and how the meals were enjoyed by everyone who attended the ceremony. Nevertheless, upon sending the bill to the bride, the caterer was met with a response that left him infuriated.
The user continued: “Due to the quick turnaround and the fact that they had been previous customers, he sent the invoice after the event, but the bride is refusing to pay because she said her mother ordered the wrong food.
“He isn’t at fault for anything here (except for not demanding payment in advance!) and the mother is avoiding all contact. The bride and her husband have been very polite about everything and have stated in writing that there was no issue with the food or service at all, but the mother ordered food they didn’t want so they’re not willing to pay.”
The user is now asking the online community if the friend should take this matter to small claims. The total owed is less than £1,000 as it was just a private family dinner celebrating the religious part of the ceremony.
The online community came out in support of the wedding caterer. One person commented: “Letter before action, then small claims. It doesn’t really matter if they ordered the wrong food, they ordered it and they got it.”
A second user said: “Ordered and consumed it. Maybe they would have a case if they refused to eat a single thing stating it was all wrong.”
A third user commented: “The mother of the bride is the person your friend needs to chase for payment. She organised it so she’s the client. Send a letter before action giving 14 days to pay the amount in full. If the amount is not paid in full within 14 days then he will file a simple procedure claim.”
