‘I know where you are from!’ – Brits ridiculed in American restaurant

A pair of Brits were given strict instructions on how to eat ribs after visiting an iconic US restaurant, where they were mocked for how they devoured the meal.

A video of two English men sampling BBQ ribs for the first time in the US has gone viral after a restaurateur corrected the way they tucked into the dish.

YouTubers Josh and Ollie, who document adventures on their shared channel, Jolly, suffered the meaty faux pas in a legendary restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. Considered the number one restaurant for ribs across the pond, the iconic Bar-B-Q Shop owned by Eric Vernon is one of the US’ most famous eateries.

The pair ordered a variety of food from Eric’s menu – most notably the glazed ribs. Josh and Ollie appeared to be blown away after being served sweet tea, before becoming visibly overwhelmed by the contents of their plates.

But for Eric, a problem soon became apparent as the Brits tucked into the ribs with a knife and fork. This prompted him to stop the duo in their tracks when he realised what was unfolding. “Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah,” he said.

“I know you’re from where you’re from, but we gonna stop with the knives. You pull it apart with your hands, and listen, you take your fingers and you lift it up and you eat it.”

Eric explained the fine American art of eating the meat. He continued: “You pull it apart with your hands. Now listen, you take your finger and you lift it up and you eat it. Not with a fork. Enjoy eating your food like that.”

Josh and Ollie duly obliged, before apologising for their error. Eric later admitted he was sorry too “for allowing it to go too far”. Josh joked: “We’re not used to meat being so soft we can break it apart without a knife.”

The food-loving duo boast four million subscribers to the channel, many of whom were quick to poke fun at their Memphis experience. “Favorite bits,” one began. “Josh wearing a white shirt to a BBQ joint, plates filled with bare bones, Eric’s humility and love for his food and patrons, Josh going crazy over baked beans!”

A second joked: “I think speaking on behalf of all Americans, that Josh and Ollie are now considered honorary Americans.” A third fan added: “Josh’s eyes and Ollie with absolutely no words when they first tasted the ribs…that’s all we needed. Those ribs look worth all the travel to get there! (Which I will do in this lifetime!) ps..loved the owner playfully scolding them about knives and forks!”

Whilst a fourth wrote in thanks: “I’m not sure if you guys realise it or not. But you are getting to experience the different food from America, where most Americans never had the opportunity to eat. And as such, we live through your gullets. Thank you! Always so positive. And to be honest, you two remind me of Laurel and Hardy. In a food way. Cheers!”

Josh and Olly’s hilarious clip has been viewed more than 740,000 times. The pair have sinced continued their tour of the American south, taking in several more Tennessee and Texan delicacies.
