A woman has revealed how her excitement quickly became disappointment after she received a surprise letter direct from the House of Commons.
Sophie Jade Butler took to TikTok to admit that her heart went “pitter patter” as the intriguing envelope dropped through her letterbox. “My first thought was, ‘Oh my God, I must have been invited to the House of Commons'” she admitted. “But what for? What have I been recognised for?”
Such was her anticipation, Sophie Jade confessed that she was shaking, and couldn’t even wait to go upstairs to open it. “My heart was racing opening this letter, think I’d be meeting the Prime Minister or whatever,” she added.
But alas, her dreams were shattered almost instantly upon realisation she wasn’t being awarded for her “acts of service in the local area”. Sophie Jade revealed: “I opened it and it’s just from my local MP letting me know she’s holding a drop-in session in my village hall soon and if I want to go, she’ll be there on 20th February between 2:30 and 3:30pm.”
She closed in jest: “So no House of Commons visit this time around, but if anyone wants to reach out, I’m happy to pop by.”

One of Sophie Jade’s followers recalled an identical scenario: “That was my thought as well when I got one!” Whilst a second was equally as disappointed on her behalf, adding: “I thought the same for you just watching this.”
Others, meanwhile, questioned the timing of the MP’s visit, one of whom penned: “Half two until half three? One hour? During school run and/or work hours? She obviously knows what she’s doing!”
And another agreed: “Most people would be at work or about to collect their children at that time!” Sophie Jade responded: “Yeah it’s not the most ideal time is it?”

Elsewhere in the Commons, meanwhile, MPs are in line for a bumper pay rise worth thousands of pounds, according to a new announcement by the pay board.
IPSA, the independent pay and standards authority, confirmed in a statement last week that MPs will receive a pay increase of 2.8%, in line with the wider public sector pay rise delivered by the Government. The boost means MPs’ pay will rise from £91,346 to £93,904, an increase of about £2,500.
IPSA, set up in the wake of the 2009 MPs’ expenses scandal, insisted the increase is a “fair decision”. However the pay rise has already faced backlash, with the Taxpayer’s Alliance saying: “This will be a bitter pill to swallow given politicians of both front benches have for years hammered the living standards of taxpayers”.
