The city of Kabul in Afghanistan is at risk of becoming the first modern city to run out of water, according to a new report.

Kabul suffers from drought caused by multiple factors, including climate change, poor water management, rapid urbanization and a growing population of approximately 5-6 million people.

The humanitarian NGO Mercy Corps released a report in April saying Kabul's water crisis had reached a critical stage, with aquifers depleted faster than they can be replenished and problems with water availability, pollution and infrastructure.
