Crosswords, Sudokus and optical illusions are all great ways to stimulate the mind in a fun and entertaining way. However, there is another way to get that mental exercise over a shorter period of time through brainteasers.
There are three main types of brainteasers, observational, analytical, and mathematical. Observational brainteasers, such as the one above from Spin Genie UK, involve spotting an anomaly within a complex image.
Meanwhile, mathematical and analytical brainteasers are quite similar. Mathematical brainteasers ask users to solve a tricky maths puzzle as quickly as possible whilst analytical brainteasers task people with solving a written riddle.
The purpose of the brainteaser above is to find the five people holding ice creams in as short a time as possible.

Did you spot the ice creams? No worries if not, the answers are circled above. The ice cream holders can be spotted in the top left and top right-hand corners of the image.
On the left is a child sitting on a bench with a cone and in the far right are two pairs of adults, each holding an ice cream in one hand.
Brainteasers such as this one help to exercise the mind the same way a light jog or walking can help stimulate the muscles in the arms or legs. These tasks could help to maintain neurological health for longer.
The healthier the mind is in the long term the less likely someone may be to develop a neurological condition such as dementia or Parkinson’s Disease. This doesn’t mean brainteasers will stop someone from getting dementia, other risk factors can have a much bigger impact, but they could help keep the mind sharper in the long run.

This ice cream-related brainteaser comes as the UK enters peak summer season with temperatures rising close to and above 25C, triggering many to consider whether or not to buy an ice cream.
According to recent research, the most popular flavour among Gen X is vanilla, but younger generations are trying more experimental flavours such as jaffa cakes and rhubarb.
Commenting on the research, QVC’s Kate James said: “It’s interesting to see that older adults are still sticking to the tried-and-tested flavours they grew up with but younger people are more willing to experiment.
“We also know ice cream making at home has been a growing trend with Google searches doubling since last year – let’s see what flavours they can come up with.”
