Apple today gives 'important' advice to all iPhone users – check your settings now

Apple just released an urgent security update for the iPhone, and this update is definitely worth taking note of.

Anyone with an iPhone should head to the Settings menu and install the latest iOS update as soon as possible. Apple has just released a major software patch, iOS 18.1.1, for its popular smartphones and is urging all users to download and install it immediately.

“iOS 18.1.1. This update includes important security fixes and is recommended for all users,” the American tech giant noted.

So what is the seriousness of this problem and why is it important to respond quickly?

This update fixes two vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to remotely infiltrate a user’s device. This means that a cybercriminal could access your data without having to physically access your Apple devices. If that doesn’t worry you, it’s worth noting that one of the reasons this update was released so quickly is because hackers are already believed to be using this vulnerability to attack certain devices in the wild – what’s called a zero-day attack.

Currently, such attacks have only occurred through Mac devices with Intel processors, but Apple is clearly committed to ensuring the security of all its products, so the vulnerability has also been patched on iPhones and iPads.

“Apple is aware of reports that this issue may be actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems,” the company added.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR iPhone

To make sure you have iOS 18.1.1, simply go to Settings > General > Software Update. Here you should see an option to download and install iOS 18.1.1.

The file is about 500MB in size, so make sure you have enough data if you're downloading it without Wi-Fi. Your iPhone may also need to restart after installation, so don't hit the download button if you're expecting an important call or message.

Speaking about the update, Michael Covington, vice president of strategy at security firm Jamf, said: “Apple's iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1 contain two critical fixes for security vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to remotely compromise users' devices. While Apple has warned that the vulnerabilities, also present in macOS, could be actively exploited on Intel systems, we strongly recommend updating any device that may be at risk.

“The fixes provided by Apple introduce stronger checks to detect and prevent malicious activity, and improve the management and tracking of device data during web browsing. Because attackers can exploit both vulnerabilities, it is critical that mobile-focused users and organizations apply the latest updates as quickly as possible.”
