China has launched the first batch of satellites for a proposed network of artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers in space.

The twelve satellites will form the backbone of a proposed 2,800-satellite fleet operated by ADA Space and Zhejiang Lab that will eventually create the Three-Body Computing Constellation, a satellite network capable of processing data directly in space.

The satellites, launched into orbit on May 14 by a Long March 2D rocket from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, are part of a strategy to reduce China's reliance on ground-based computing systems.
