Japan has set a new internet speed record of 125,000 gigabytes per second – 4 million times faster than the average speed in the US.

To achieve this incredible speed, researchers have developed a new type of optical fiber that can transmit information over a distance comparable to the route from New York to Florida. (Image credit: Getty Images/Andriy Onufriyenko)

Scientists in Japan say they have set a new world record for internet speed by transmitting more than 125,000 gigabytes of data per second over a distance of 1,120 miles (1,802 kilometers).

That's about 4 million times faster than the average U.S. internet speed and, by some estimates, would allow the entire Internet Archive to be downloaded in less than four minutes. It's also more than double the previous world record of 50,250 Gbps, set by another group of scientists in 2024.

To achieve this new speed (which has not yet been independently verified), the team developed an innovative form of optical fiber to transmit information at unprecedented speeds over a distance roughly equal to the distance between New York and Florida.
