Northrup Grumman's Cygnus XL cargo ship arrived at the International Space Station on Thursday after its resupply mission was delayed by engine problems.

The spacecraft was captured by the ISS's robotic arm, Canadarm2, at 7:24 a.m. ET, when NASA astronauts Johnny Kim and Zena Cardman returned it to Earth.

The Northrup Grumman Commercial Resupply Services 23 mission will deliver more than 11,000 pounds of scientific research and cargo to the ISS, and the spacecraft is expected to remain on the station until spring.

Arrival at the ISS was delayed a day after the initial launch due to the premature shutdown of the Cygnus main engine.

The launch took place on Sunday and the ship was expected to arrive at the ISS by Tuesday evening, but NASA pushed back the deadline due to an engine failure.

This was the first flight of Cygnus XL with a longer pressurized cargo module capable of carrying 33% more payload than the previous version.
