WhatsApp has made minor but “annoying” changes to its popular chat app and users are not happy.
Regular WhatsApp users may have suddenly noticed a subtle but “annoying” change in the way they communicate with friends and family. The hugely popular app, which has around 3 billion users worldwide, appears to have rolled out an update that has replaced the popular “ Type to Text ” feature with three dots that now pop up when someone replies to a message.
Previously, when you were typing, the recipient would see ” Typing ” at the top of the chat, but that's changed: three dots will appear next to the last message you sent.
While it may seem like a minor update, Messenger users are clearly not happy, with many heading to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustration.
“Hey @WhatsApp, can we bring back the old 'typing' display? These jumping dots are getting annoying,” Farah wrote in a post on X.
Another user, known as Miss How, expressed her displeasure: “WhatsApp now has a three-dot typing feature like iMessage and I don't like it!”
User Richy added: “WhatsApp's new typing animation seems to be designed specifically to make me anxious.”
And WhatsApp fan Snehal chimed in: “What the hell, WhatsApp, what are these ellipses? Bring back the good old 'typing'.”
It's unclear why WhatsApp has ditched the “typing” message at the top of the app, but the bouncing three dots aren't new. Apple's iMessage has long used the symbols when messaging other iPhone users.
Given the massive response to the update, it will be interesting to see if WhatsApp decides to bring back the old feature and go back to the “type text” message.
At the moment, more and more users are noticing the changes and are definitely not happy with them.
