A plate of peeled bananas appears on the same street every month – no one knows why

An ordinary street in Nottinghamshire has found itself at the centre of a fruit mystery that some are calling for an end to.

Residents of Abbey Road and Vensor Avenue in Beston have been left in disarray for more than a year after a plate of peeled bananas was left at the junction of their streets.

The fruit bowl appears in the same place on the second of every month, and confused locals have been unable to figure out who is behind these oddities and why it happens.

The fruits appear early in the morning on the second day of the month, and therefore no one was able to catch the prankster at the scene.

But now residents are asking for this prank to be stopped as the fruit is starting to rot and create a mess.

Next to the road signs, at the place where bananas are left every month, there was a printed note attached with the text: “Please, with respect, no more bananas!”

“Uncleaned plates and rotting bananas make such a mess! Happy New Year to everyone!”

Locals describe the phenomenon as “annoying” and at least one person is said to have reported the problem to police.

One local resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I've heard it's some kind of cleansing ritual, but frankly it's just weird and scares people. I know at least one person who reported it to the police.”

Another local resident, Claire Short, said: “I've asked my neighbours but no-one knows or can explain anything to me.”

“Bananas appear early in the morning on the second of the month, I see them on my way to work. I would really like to have answers to these questions.

“I came to take down the posters because I don’t want this to become a conflict, I don’t want this to become something bigger.”

“I think it's something special for someone and I wish them the best. But if they could come back and clean up the mess in a few days, that would be great.”

“I will keep an eye on this and continue to restore order.”

Josh Trentham, 26, added: “I live nearby and bananas appear here quite often. It's really annoying, I have no idea why they're there.”

Jill Dowling, who lives nearby, said: “It's so weird and disgusting. Someone leaves this here and I don't like it.”

Janet Hutchinson, 81, said: “The bananas are clearly freshly bought and not touched by wild animals. They are starting to go mouldy – it's disgusting.”

Meanwhile, Janet's neighbour Adam Castle, 34, said: “I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing but it's weird. I've never heard or seen it anywhere I've lived.”
