A passenger on a flight has spoken out in support of a controversial travel practice, sparking debate about air travel etiquette.

The “lice at the gate” trend was widely discussed last year when American Airlines began barring passengers from boarding planes until they were seated in a specific area.

The airline has begun using technology that alerts gate agents when passengers attempt to board early, Fox News Digital reports.

Recently, a traveler posted on Reddit's r/delta forum in defense of “gate lice.”

“I'm flying out of [Philadelphia] today and I can't hear the gate agent saying, 'Boarding, blah blah blah.' What?” he wrote in his post.

The user admitted that he has hearing problems, but his wife hears normally.

“We were not alone because everyone was crowding around the gate trying to understand what this ridiculous woman was saying,” he added.

“There was a sign showing the boarding zones that were currently cleared for boarding, but it was facing the other gates, not where all the lice were at the gate… You had to get in the way of the cleared passengers to read the sign! Total madness,” he continued.

The user also shared his complaints about the volume of voices from gate staff and pilots over the loudspeaker.

Reddit users took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the “gate lice” and their personal experiences with the flights.

“I stand against the wall facing the gate so I can hear the announcements. I don't consider myself a gate lice,” one user commented.

Another user noted: “What worries me is the inconsistency. Figure out the best way to board a plane… and then every airport will follow suit.”

“Just a couple of weeks ago I realized I couldn't hear anything the agent was saying at the front desk,” one user said. “I couldn't see the screens and had to get closer, like those horrible lice at the front desk. But honestly, I couldn't understand what they were saying. It was completely inaudible.”

Other Reddit users expressed their opinions regarding the volume and tone of the announcements made by agents at the entrance.

“I was boarding a flight in Atlanta and [the gate agent] mumbled something into the microphone and then turned to the woman next to her and laughed. No one could understand what she was saying,” one user commented.

Another user wrote: “Everyone needs to learn how to pronounce words correctly. Then you won't have to raise your voice so much. Everyone will understand words spoken clearly.”
