The well-known proverb “nobody likes a backseat driver” is confirmed by the story of one couple.

Discussing his relationship problems on Reddit, a user asked if he was wrong to “refuse to drive when my wife is in the car.”

He wrote: “For many years after our marriage, I couldn't understand why I became so irritable and moody when my wife and I were driving somewhere. And now it finally dawned on me. I was only in a bad mood when I was driving with her.”

He added: “My wife is the worst passenger I have ever met.”

The user noted that no matter how he drives, his wife “always finds something to criticize,” he said. He cited examples of her comments such as, “Why did you go that way?” and “You're going too fast.”

He also mentioned that she criticized his parking skills, use of turn signals and the way he accelerated.

“So I've avoided driving for the last couple of years,” he wrote. “Now I make her drive. And now I don't nag when we travel.”

However, he added that his wife was unhappy with the situation as she was always behind the wheel. She asked him to share the driving “equally”.

“I started driving again last weekend,” he wrote. “She couldn't go three minutes without criticizing my driving. I pulled over and told her I wasn't going to take it anymore. She either took over or we were going home,” the man added.

“She eventually got behind the wheel,” he wrote. “She muttered that I was driving like an idiot, even though only one of us had tickets and accidents that were his fault, and it wasn't me,” he added.

Reddit users were active in leaving comments about this.

“It looks like you've come up with a pretty reasonable solution,” one commenter wrote.

Another user noted: “This hostility goes beyond backseat driving. She seems very angry.”

“People sometimes behave differently in cars than they do in everyday life, and this can cause unexpected reactions,” added another commenter.

One Reddit user suggested: “Record her driving, then play the recording while she's driving. Let her hear herself complaining the whole way.”

“My husband is a [very bad] driver and he fully admits it,” one user shared.

“If you want to be a bit edgy, ask her how many penalty points she has on her licence, but that will definitely lead to a fight,” joked another commenter.

One Reddit user added: “Damn man, I wouldn't even risk riding in the same car with that woman. I'd drive my own car
